Consumption

A chronic infectious disease. Mainly prevalent in countries with average to low living standards, where it takes on high mortality rates. The disease is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis (for which humans are the main reservoir). It primarily affects the lungs and is transmitted through coughing, singing, and other respiratory actions. Initially, patients complain of muscle weakness and weight loss. Cough and night fever are often among the initial symptoms. Skin dryness is present. In severe cases, haemoptysis occurs. High case fatality rate.
